Shopping for your House
It's Time to "Prove Up" your Claim!
It has been 5 years since you filed your claim in 1870 and now it's time to get the title to the land. In order to do this you have to "prove up," or provide evidence that you have made improvements on the land. Under the Homestead Act the improvement requirements were to build a house, live on the land, and work the land. The government requires an inventory list of the property; this includes buildings, fences, number of acres cultivated, type of crops, livestock, and personal property accumulated. Don't forget to include your bonus supplies you may have received. Create the inventory spreadsheet for HPs.
Check to see that you have enough Homesteading Points (HPs) to get the title to your land.
When you have enough HPs, you need to find two people in the room who have been on their land as long as you have and ask them to sign as witnesses. Create an inventory in a spreadsheet and email it to your teacher. After you have completed the inventory, fill in the proving up form below listing the names of the two witnesses.
